National census (2011) shows Nepal’s literacy rate was 65.9 percent. Therefore, non-formal education centre (NFEC) started “literacy campaign” a special program across the country from 2012 targeting illiterate one to develop Nepal as literate Nepal. Literacy classes were conducted for adult illiterates. Finally, over 3 million adults were literate in three years since the census and the literacy rate become 84 percent (as cited in Ghimire, 2014). Besides that, a door-to-door survey found that there were 4,054,649 uneducated adults in the fiscal year 2012-13. Out of them around 915,000 of adult became literate through literacy campaigns held in the year 2012. About 1.34 million adults benefitted from literacy classes in the fiscal 2013-14. However, about 1.74 million adults above 15 years of age were remained illiterate. Out of them 1.46 million illiterate adults were from 16 districts in Tarai and Nuwakot, the worst among the Hill districts (as cited in Ghimire, 2014). Hence, targeting those illiterate adults, government of Nepal had set the goal of declaring 2014-15 as the Illiteracy Elimination Year as per the global commitment to eliminate illiteracy by 2015 as envisaged by the Millennium Development Goal. Government of Nepal had organized literacy programs in 16 districts in Tarai and Nuwakot in the new fiscal year 2015. The main objective of the program was to eradicate illiteracy in Siraha, Saptari, Bara, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Kapilvastu, Morang, Dang and Nawalparasi in Tarai. For that government of Nepal had decided to recruit some 20,000 teachers and mobilize students and volunteers and NRs 1.05 billion was planned for the effective implementation of literate Nepal mission and declared such districts as “total literate” on the basis of 95 percent literacy rate (as cited in Ghimire, 2014). Danusha is one of the districts where focused literacy program was launched by government of Nepal to eradicate literacy and LIFE Nepal contributed in such campaign. Finally, 5,516 adults (Female-3720) literate through Literate Nepal Campaign in 4VDCs of Dhanusha district , they can read, write and understand Nepali and mother language and able to do daily simple day to day mathematical business and to perform daily activities.
